Mimi Choi Is TikTok’s Wildest Makeup Artist

A look can take anywhere between 2 to 10 hours depending on how large and intricate it is. On average, I spend about 5 hours per look. My biggest struggle is fighting exhaustion and avoiding feeling burnt out. For some of my longer looks, I will take a nap in between. If I had the patience, I would probably paint for days, as I always see areas that I can improve and am never completely satisfied with a look!

What’s the most surprising product or tool to create your looks?

One of my most important tools aren’t makeup brushes at all. They are fine-detailed art brushes that I buy from Michael’s. I also constantly use my iPhone to take photos throughout the process so that I can catch details that I would otherwise have missed, like matching colors and angles.

What has been your most viral video, and why do you think it went viral?

The block feature face that I did recently received millions of likes and views across my social media platforms. It was a revamped recreation of an illusion I did about 6 years ago, and sharing it on TikTok really helped it go viral. Since posting it on TikTok, the video has been requested to be used in a bunch of unique projects that I can’t wait to share!

What’s your favorite TikTok of all time? And which one took you the longest?

It’s difficult to pick a favorite but the fish face TikTok that I did kickstarted my presence on the platform as my following grew from 2K to 40K in a couple of days. Most of my TikToks take about 15 minutes to put together (excluding the time required to create the look). I love the fact that TikTok lets me exercise my creativity and allows me to re-share my work with a new audience.

What’s the next big idea you want to attempt on TikTok?

I’m very spontaneous and don’t usually plan things, so I’m not really sure what’s next. I do know that I will continue to follow my instincts and evolve as an artist. Maybe I’ll do more large-scale illusions as I learn to become more patient, but you’ll have to keep following me to see what’s next!
