The Batman doesn’t hit theaters until March of next year, but anticipation is already at an all-time high. The main trailer for the Matt Reeves-directed reboot dropped less than two weeks ago and fans have spent the days since absolutely losing their shit. Robert Pattinson’s haunted take on the Dark Knight leaves much to be excited about, but our primary concern right now is of a slightly more, ah, material nature. Forget decoding hidden Easter eggs and talking through mystifying plot points: all we want to know is who’s responsible for Batman’s scene-stealing sunnies!
If you, too, paused the trailer a little over a minute in and did a serious double-take, you’re in luck—our enterprising colleagues at GQ UK just unearthed a major scoop. Turns out, Batman’s shades—on display for all of, like, half a second—are from none other than Persol, the legendary sunglasses brand that remains a perennial favorite of Hollywood royalty.
Our British counterparts called them “some of the best sunglasses we’ve seen since a Ray-Ban-wearing Will Smith graced screens in 1997’s Men In Black or, indeed, Keanu Reeves made the case for minimalist metal sunglasses in The Matrix.” We concur. And if you dig the look of Pattinson’s sad boy Bruce Wayne—all trim black tailoring and gnawing existential ennui—they’re the easiest way to bite his style without throwing on a cape.
